  4.     In the story on state-sponsored lotteries (NATION, July 10),
  5. we mentioned a popular form of lottery in which a bettor picks six
  6. out of 54 numbers. We said the odds of getting the right six are
  7. 1 in 12.9 million. Several readers have pointed out that the odds
  8. of picking the winners are 1 in 25.8 million. We failed to make
  9. clear that for the kind of lottery we had in mind, a $1 ticket
  10. gives the bettor two chances to pick the lucky six numbers; in this
  11. case the odds of winning on a $1, two-game ticket are 1 in 12.9
  12. million.
