- In the story on state-sponsored lotteries (NATION, July 10),
- we mentioned a popular form of lottery in which a bettor picks six
- out of 54 numbers. We said the odds of getting the right six are
- 1 in 12.9 million. Several readers have pointed out that the odds
- of picking the winners are 1 in 25.8 million. We failed to make
- clear that for the kind of lottery we had in mind, a $1 ticket
- gives the bettor two chances to pick the lucky six numbers; in this
- case the odds of winning on a $1, two-game ticket are 1 in 12.9
- million.
